What took you so long?

The Complete Beginner

I wasn’t even aware how little I knew about the technology world until I oversaw a huge system implementation project at work that impacted the entire organisation.  The learning curve was vast and suddenly I was the weakest link in the room as people were talking to me, in what sounded like a different language.

Unless you are in the technology industry, you don’t think much about how systems and the internet operate.  At least, I didn’t.  We use technology every day in our lives, yet I’d never ventured into the mechanics of this world until now.

The Mid Life Learning Curve!

My work project piqued my interest, and I knew I was on a massive journey of learning which was exciting.  After far too many years in one profession, to venture into another was an absolute gift.  At the same time, my work life balance was non-existent, so adding more pressure to an already tough routine wasn’t going to be easy.

I thought I was too late to start learning something completely new.  I foolishly thought my age would be a barrier….  even as I write that, I realise how ridiculous it sounds!  But hear me out.   My entire career has been about people, diversity and equality.  I know firsthand the impact that an ageist mindset can cause.  Some organisations are happy to move the “olds” on for new, younger blood.  I’ve always been a strong advocate for balance across all age groups to ensure organisations remain relevant by holding onto the knowledge as well as compliment this with new ideas and thinking.

So, what my work project did was kick start my personal growth in this niche to a place that gave me balance and focused me on the next “Edits” of my journey and, this blog is a direct result of my travels into the online digital world.

Learning the Basics

Initially, I wanted to create a business that satisfied just one criteria; a platform to write and share stories about our Life Edits, sharing perspectives from others, and perhaps use the Brand to design a few items that I could sell on platforms such as Etsy.  I’ve always been the creative type and enjoy the process immensely.

But Woah!  What a journey it’s been so far!  It is quite literally like learning a new language.  It’s like a crazy Mind Map full of disconnect!  You can go down many rabbit holes whilst researching and learning.  It wasn’t long before realising my vision was far too small and I was being disabled by my lack of knowledge.

Mind blown, I jumped right into the world of opportunity in online digital marketing and products.  But even I can’t eat a whole elephant in one sitting!  Trial and error does not evade my days, it continues to be my best friend in this new venture, and I’m ok with that as I’m learning and challenging myself.

I want to point out that this was a hobby for me initially, something to provide me with work life balance.  It is not meant to replace my work initially.  So having that clear in my mind, helped me focus on learning from scratch everything I needed to know.  I chose not to engage others to create my new world.  That said, if I find I’m trying to figure out something and just cannot get there, I will outsource it and take advice from others who are enjoying success in this space or directly to the professionals.

There are so many resources available that it makes it very easy to get up and running. I’m very aware that what took me nearly a year to establish, could have been done much quicker had I looked at this as a commercial endeavour.

However, I’ve built out a scalable business for passive income that doesn’t require 16 hours a day to create and manage.  There are lots of ways to create passive income and I’ll share my journey with you all.

Automation is key here, the more you learn how to automate all your systems, the easier it becomes to schedule your time and use it wisely.  My focus on this has been huge as I prefer to spend my time creating content such as videos and posts for social media and blogs.  This is where I am truly immersed and finding my joy.

Go ahead and download my free guide that covers the basics and things to think about before you dive into the digital world.  BUT please, don’t wait. If you are sofa surfing, drowning in TV marathons or scrolling your social media aimlessly, ask yourself “what would be a better use of my time?”  If I can do this, I’m sure most can.  Do I know everything I need to know…?  Absolutely not!  Every day is a learning day, but also an “earning” day!
