The 50 Something Traveller

Life as a 50-something single professional has its perks, and one of the greatest is the opportunity to explore the world.  Over the years, my work has taken me to destinations spanning the globe, from the vibrant streets of Rio de Janeiro to the bustling cities of Australia, the serene beauty of the Caribbean islands and the wonder of the Middle East.  Through countless journeys, I’ve honed my travel skills to create a seamless blend of work and play, ensuring that every trip is not only productive but also immensely enjoyable.  I’m going to share with you my version of all things travel, including some of the places I’ve been, how I prepare for stress-free travel (which never happens, but I try!), packing strategies, and wellness practices that have kept me going strong across all continents.

Mastering the Art of Packing

The cornerstone of successful travel is efficient packing. Gone are the days of lugging around heavy suitcases and wondering if you’ve forgotten something crucial. Instead, I’ve developed a minimalist approach to packing that allows me to have everything I need while still keeping my luggage manageable.

My secret? Versatile clothing choices. Rather than packing a different outfit for every day, I choose pieces that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. A classic pair of black trousers or a versatile blazer can transform from a professional meeting to a dinner at a fancy restaurant with a simple change of accessories. This approach not only saves space but also minimizes the stress of outfit selection.

Balancing Work and Play

Being a seasoned traveller means knowing how to strike the right balance between work obligations and personal enjoyment. While business meetings and conferences might be the primary reason for your trip, it’s essential to find time for leisure and exploring new locations.  Before you travel, make sure you are on top of your business calendar as time zones can be challenging and you can often find you are booked right through to bed time if you are not on top of managing your digital life!

Banishing Travel Stress

Traveling can be inherently stressful, but I’ve learned a few tricks to keep stress at bay. One of my go-to strategies is meticulous planning and preparation. Long before I embark on a journey, I create a comprehensive itinerary, including flight details, hotel reservations, and a list of must-see attractions. This not only helps me stay organized but also allows me to make the most of my limited time in each destination.

Additionally, I always pack a well-stocked travel kit, complete with essentials like a neck pillow, noise-cancelling headphones, and a portable charger. These small comforts can make a world of difference during long flights or unexpected delays.

The Importance of Wellbeing

Maintaining physical and mental wellbeing while on the road is paramount, especially when dealing with multiple time zones. To combat jet lag and ensure I’m in top form for business meetings, I have a few trusty remedies up my sleeve.

First and foremost, I prioritize hydration. Staying well-hydrated is key to combating the dehydrating effects of air travel. I also make sure to move around during long flights to prevent stiffness and promote circulation. Stretching exercises and short walks down the aisle are my go-to strategies.

For adjusting to new time zones, I’ve found that gradually shifting my sleep schedule a few days before departure can make a significant difference. Additionally, a good night’s sleep and avoiding caffeine and heavy meals before bedtime can help reset your internal clock.

While work may be the primary reason for my travels, I’ve also embraced the opportunity to explore and savour the unique experiences each destination has to offer. Whether it’s sipping cocktails on the beaches of the Caribbean, wandering through the historic streets of Greece, or indulging in the culinary delights of China, I make it a point to immerse myself in the local culture.

As a single traveller, I’ve discovered that the world is full of opportunities to meet new people and forge connections. Whether it’s striking up a conversation with a fellow traveller at a local cafe or joining a guided tour, there are countless ways to make friends and share experiences.

I invite you to join me on this exciting journey through my blogs to discover more tips, stories, and inspiration for your own travels. The world is waiting, and there’s no time like the present to start exploring!
